The Rise of Beauty Blogging


In the Kingsport Times News article called "Sisters Take Their YouTube Success to Seventeen," Marci Gore talks about the success the Fowler sisters, in addition to other (b/v)loggers, in the YouTube beauty community. Gore focuses on the popularity of Blair & Elle Fowler. At the time of this article, the Fowlers had over 100,000 YouTube subscribers combined. They became more known when they collaborated with Seventeen Magazine and became their "Beauty Smarties" along with eight other beauty bloggers.Beauty Smarties provide make up or hair tutorials on how to achieve a desired look. Other Beauty Smarties include Leesha (xSparkage) and Ingrid (MissGlamorazzi) of YouTube. As they have a big fan base, they are YouTube partners which allows them to monetize their videos and receive a profit from it.

To date,  Elle and Blair have over 1,600,000 subscribers of all ages. Their popularity has also lead to contracts with Cellairis, a cell phone accessory company, designing limited edition phone covers.

Television Newscast

Christine Devine of Fox 11 News dives into the world of make up tutorials on YouTube during the November 13, 2010 airing. She looks into the most popular and "twisted" make up tutorials demonstrating how to turn into the queen of hearts or as a zombie with unzipped eyes. Many beauty gurus are gaining sponsorships due to the high number of views per video. Others get the opportunity of launching their own cosmetics or fashion lines (such as Michelle Phan's skincare line, IQQU).


Social Networks

Beauty gurus keep touch with their fan base on social media such as Twitter and Facebook. It allows them to interact with them and update them whenever a video is posted. Additionally, it helps them figure out what their viewers want to see.


Analysis


In order for this topic to be possible at all, social media made it happen with user generated content on YouTube. On social media such as Facebook and Twitter, beauty bloggers are able to interact with their viewers by answering their questions and posting polls for them to vote on. User generated content has made a positive impact for their audience and themselves. They're able to put themselves out there and post original content. There is always an audience for everything, even for something as small as make up. These bloggers also had opportunities that may not have been possible otherwise. Many popular bloggers don't work in the cosmetics industry; they may be students or news anchors. Some have been presented with opportunities such as launching their own cosmetic or skin care line in big stores such as Sephora and Ulta. Lauren Luke (Panacea81 on YouTube) had the chance to get her own TV show in the UK, launch a set of palettes to Sephora, work as a product demonstrator for BarryM cosmetics, and launch her own game for portable game systems such as Nintendo DS and PSP as a result of her filming make up videos on YouTube while making a living as an eBay merchant. Michelle Phan, a former art student, launched her skin care line "IQQU", operates an online business called "My Glam Bag" which is a monthly $10 subscription which sends a makeup bag with deluxe, or even full sized cosmetics and skin care samples to their customers, and works for Lancome USA making tutorials using their products. She also managed to release a palette designed by herself. MAC Cosmetics also released an online-only collection where 10 beauty bloggers had the opportunity to create their dream product. 5 bloggers had the task of designing lip glass colors and the other 5 designed eye shadows. This successful collection was only released in North America. 


The facts though out all sources seems accurate. The newspaper source focuses on two bloggers while the Fox 11 airing focuses on the beauty community as a whole. 


The message was conveyed once during the news in addition to bring posted online with the video clip that was aired. It is presented the same in both formats. 


Compiling everything in one place can be convenient for the audience. Since youtube allows them to subscribe to their favorite blogger's channel, the feed updates instantly as soon as something is posted. It can raise questions about ethics such as permission to use copyrighted content in videos or publishing a persons full name when they go by an alias online. Some people find it a hobby to look into a few blogger's private lives an publicize it on gossip forums. Many of them just bash them there, if not on blogger's videos in a comment form.

Cruise Ship Runs Aground by Nick Mendez

The cruise liner Costa Concordia lies aground in front of the Isola del Giglio  on January 23 after hitting underwater rocks on January 13.

Survivors from a luxury cruise ship that ran aground and tipped over, leaving at least three dead and 69 people still unaccounted for, described Saturday a chaotic evacuation, as plates and glasses crashed and they crawled along upended hallways trying to reach safety.

Three bodies were recovered from the sea after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the tiny island of Giglio near the coast of Tuscany late Friday, tearing a 160-foot gash in its hull and sending in a rush of water.

The ANSA news agency quoting the prefect's office in the province of Grosseto as saying that authorities have accounted for 4,165 of the 4,234 people who had boarded the liner."

  • The story gives some numbers on the incident and portrays how it might have been to be on board through quotes of survivors. Updates are daily and as it continues to be reported on, the story is going from the urgency to save the trapped people, to a rush to get the oil out to save the environment.

  • News on the Costa Concordia's condition has been updated every time there has been an increase in the number of deceased, more findings in the captains blatant negligence, the status of the ships current condition at sea, and the efforts of retrieving the left over oil. Updates are frequent and through out the day. The presentation is informative.

  • The blog is an interview by Scott Simon. He asks questions and has quotes from people who experienced the incident.
Social Network Tool: Facebook
  • The Facebook page has over 10,000 likes and over 7,700 people are talking about it. There is a description of the ship and what it had to offer guests aboard.
Analysis
  • Social media is used to inform or try to relate the experience to the audience in each of the examples.  All media now uses face book, twitter along with other social media tools to try to get information out to the people faster. Using these channels the audience can interact with each other and share information with people they know this creates a sense of community.
  • The online news channel is effective as it allows for feedback, sharing, and continuous updates.  TV broadcast is just updated whenever something major is discovered and is very effective as there are millions of people around the world watching the news throughout the day. The blog is not so effective because the audience is so narrow anyone outside of the authors circle is unlikely to read it. Face book is a great tool as it allows for constant updates and sharing of news. Facts do vary from sources as some are updated and others are not but the numbers are all consistent. Online news is just readers, the broadcast is for TV watchers,  the blog is for a narrow audience, and face book has the power of the network.  
  • Sky News a TV station also has as an online website. The broadcast is very brief but updated constantly, the online version is much more informative, is updated constantly and the viewer can peruse it as his/her own leisure. 
  • Citizen journalism is a great thing, today anyone can be a journalist by just using the camera on their phone. Citizen journalism does raise issues of ethics as they are not tied to corporation standards, they can take videos out of context and make something seem a certain way without showing the whole story. The audience questions the submitters credibility and do not know whether they can trust what they are seeing.

Stop Online Piracy Act




Internet Blackout


Vote Postponed



In the Huffington Post article entitled "SOPA Blackout Aims to Block Internet Censorship Bill" (01-18-2012) Ryan Grim and Zach Carter describe the blackout protests enacted by major companies such as Wikipedia. The article elaborates on what the bill entails which is that the government and major companies will have the power to shut down entire websites accused of copyright infringement without any trial or proper hearing. The article goes into great detail of many politicians and their views on the bill.

Two Days later Zach Carter and Luke Johnson posted a follow-up article "PIPA Vote: Sen. Harry Reid Postpones Vote, Seeking Compromise on Anti-Piracy Bill." (01-20-2012) The delay to the vote on the controversial bill is in direct response to the internet blackout and protests described in the previous article.





CNN's The Situation Room Dan Simon does an exposé  on the SOPA and PIPA Bills. He gives an example of people downloading the newly released movie War Horse causing financial hardships on the entertainment industry. Such websites as Piratebay.org make movies available days after they are released in theaters. The newscast continues to describe the fight  between Silicon Valley and Hollywood through the use of
Legislation.



CNN's coverage on SOPA was continued during   the GOP debates on January 19th. Republican nominees Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum all gave their opinions on the bill and across the board agreed that it infringed upon American's freedom. What started out as just an ordinary bill, has evolved into a topic that will be debated as a controversial issue  in the upcoming presidential election.





           
                      SOPA            Update

On the Dilbert Blog by Scott Adams he opens the discussion of SOPA by saying that he is writing to a rational audience that is struggling with controversial points of view. He offers many opinions on the matter including: Rule of thumb logic, expert opinions, Cross-over opinions, and concludes with his opinion which he describes as being against the bill because he cannot predict all of the impacts that the bill may have.

One day later he posts an update saying that for all intensive purposes SOPA had been killed by the internet. Within several hours the most pressing issue of the country was destroyed by internet protests. It amazes me how fast news can change and how obsolete the most pressing of issues become.

The MSNBC twitter page is a very active feed. A humorous tweet from the show Red Tape Chronicles says "Red Tape: Stop pirating my stories about #SOPA, or I'll have to support it." It then links to a full version of the story and a link to the twitter page of the Red Tape Chronicles. SOPA appears in a hash-tag(#) in order to track the story with all other SOPA updates. It is a funny sarcastic tweet that engages followers to read the whole story which goes on to describe how hypocritical some news agencies are.

Several days later another tweet is made by MSNBC saying that a "Congressman withdraws #SOPA anti-piracy bill" This informative tweet summarizes the entire story in under 140 characters so it does not interest followers to continue reading the whole story. The use of twitter is perfect for describing the  practical end to the bill.



Analysis 

  • Social Media is used in each example by having a Facebook, twitter, and google +, post button to promote each story. All of the media utilize each other's strengths such as the seemingly boring Huffington Post has many videos related to the article. The twitter feed has a link to a much longer news story. The merging of the many types of media channels creates a more engaging experience for the viewer. 
  • Obviously,  the "Hard News" is going to be the most reliable. News broadcasts are typically editorialized to be more interesting for the viewer so the facts tend to be slightly watered down. Since blogs rely heavily on opinion and user generated discussions they are the least reliable; however, they tend to be the most eye opening because bloggers are free to say what news companies cannot. Social media sites are the nice middle ground between blogs and hard news because they report the news story in a manner that is easy for the masses to understand.
  • Even though most of these media vehicles have multiple gateways in which they can spread and update news, the message is modified to utilize each type of media. Video feeds can rely on images to persuade audiences where a print story must utilize the actual facts of the story. Although the message and tone is the same, it has to be presented in a different manner. When the online portal is opened stories are able to be conveyed instantly with the click of the mouse, whereas a news show will have to wait until its scheduled time-slot. A story online usually has links to each different type of media channel from that distinct company.
  • The rise in Citizen journalism is due in large part to the video technology and blogging ability of the general population. Everyone has the opportunity to post their side of a story and their thoughts upon any matter. This is keeping news companies more honest, by having people that were there at the right time, the right place, with a recording device allows the truth to be captured as it occurs. The first amendment right of freedom of speech and press protects citizen journalists and gives a more realistic and truthful view on the news.
